GSBS Summer Internships
GSBS Summer Research Internships
We offer three ten-week internship programs designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and researchers. These programs provide undergraduate students with hands-on experience in cutting-edge biomedical or pharmaceutical research, mentorship from accomplished faculty, and the opportunity to explore careers in the sciences. Each program is uniquely tailored to foster academic growth, critical thinking, and a passion for discovery.
- Amarillo Biomedical Research Internship (ABRI)
- Located in Amarillo, Texas
- Focuses on pharmaceutical research
- Biomedical Research Internship in Abilene (BRIA)
- Located in Abilene, Texas
- Focuses on pharmaceutical and biomedical research
- Summer Accelerated Biomedical Research (SABR)
- Located in Lubbock, Texas
- Focuses on biomedical research
Whether you're just beginning to explore the field or are preparing for advanced studies, our internships are an invaluable step toward a future in biomedical sciences or pharmaceutical research.
General Internship Guidelines
The following details apply to all of our internships. For specific internship information, please select the internship you are interested in below.
Program Expectations and Guidelines
Our internship programs are a 10-week immersive research experience, generally running from the end of May to the beginning of August, with a stipend of $4000 (before taxes). Stipend payments are disbursed in two installments on July 1 and August 1, contingent upon completion of the full program duration.
The internships will introduce its interns to a full-time work schedule, which can be a first-time experience for many. During these 10 weeks, our interns will be exposed to the life of a graduate student, as well as learn to become more independent and self-autonomous. Along the way, interns will be helped by their mentor, graduate students, other lab staff members, and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences' administration.
Interns are responsible for arranging their housing accommodations.
Schedule and Workload
Participants are expected to dedicate at least 40 hours per week to their research projects, with additional hours, including nights or weekends, if experiments require. Your mentor will help you establish a daily and weekly schedule to best support your experiments. A lunch break should not exceed 60 minutes.
In the event of illness or tardiness exceeding 30 minutes, you must notify both the GSBS office and your mentor.
Commitment Requirements
Given the intensive nature of the program, participants cannot enroll in summer school courses or maintain other job commitments during the program. If you currently hold a position within the TTU System, you will need to pause that position for the summer to ensure stipend processing.
Mandatory Activities
Orientation, safety training, and weekly seminars are mandatory for all participants, with no exceptions. You are expected to arrive promptly for all activities. If you are unable to attend due to illness, the GSBS office must be notified in advance.
Research Project
The internship is designed for you to complete an independent research project within the 10-week timeframe. This is an immersive experience, and time off will only be approved in emergency situations.
Final Research Symposium
All participants are required to attend the Final Research Symposium. During the program, you will prepare an abstract and present your findings at this event. Please plan your travel accordingly to ensure full participation.
Experience and Rewards
The internship program offers an opportunity to learn new techniques, explore innovative ideas, build lasting connections, and grow as an independent researcher—all while having a great summer! Your dedication and hard work will be richly rewarded, and we look forward to welcoming you to the GSBS crew!

This program is not intended to provide medical or pharmacy training; instead, it is designed for those interested in pursuing research-focused careers, such as a PhD in the biomedical sciences.
Duration and Schedule
The program lasts ten weeks, starting on May 27 and concluding on August 1.
Benefits
- $4,000 Stipend: Participants receive a stipend paid in two increments—$2,000 on July 1 and $2,000 on August 1.
- Hands-On Learning: Gain one-on-one, hands-on experience while working closely with faculty and researchers.
- Skill Development: Learn new ideas and techniques, conduct research, and develop applied research skills that prepare you for advanced study.
- Application Fee Waiver: Participants will receive a waiver for future application fees to GSBS programs.
How to Apply
The deadline to apply for our 2025 cycle is March 15.
Applications for ABRI are completed through BioRaider.com, which hosts our application system.
While creating a BioRaider.com account, rather than selecting ABRI for the academic program of interest, select the eventual graduate program of interest (for example, Pharmaceutical Sciences M.S. or Ph.D.). Once your account is complete, you can select the Summer Internships application for ABRI.
