GSBS Graduation - May 2025

The GSBS graduation ceremony will take place on Friday, May 9 at 2:00 pm at the TTU Allen Theatre. We are estimating the ceremony to last no more than two hours with a reception to follow in the Red Raider Ballroom.

Action Items

Post-Graduate Plans and Reader Card Survey

This survey includes each student’s post graduate plans, non-TTUHSC email, and contact information. For students that will be attending the ceremony there will also be a section for completing the Reader Card. The Reader Card is the information that will be read aloud as graduates walk across the stage.

The reader card survey will be sent out at the end of March to graduates' official TTUHSC email.

Student Graduation Fee

The graduation fee is $100 and will be posted to your WebRaider account in April. Students will receive email notification from GSBS Staff, and once notified, students will have 48 hours to pay and avoid late/billing fees.

  • Only applicable for May 2025 Graduates - Past Grads have already paid
  • Ph.D. Students will also have a $50 ETD Fee
  • Ph.D. Grads will also be receiving an SED Survey
  • Fees will be posted in April

Regalia

Students that ordered regalia and selected “pick up” may do so the week prior to graduation at West Texas Graduation Services located at 2904 50th Street, Lubbock TX, 79413. Regalia that was not picked up the week prior to graduation, will be delivered to the GSBS office. Students will be notified of the days/times when it is available for pickup.

Those that selected to ship their regalia, will have shipments starting two weeks prior to graduation. Students and faculty must come wearing regalia. Please direct any further regalia questions to the West Texas Graduation Services office:

Ceremony protocol

There is not a limit on the number of guests each graduate is allowed. We recommend arriving by 1:30 pm at the latest! Come wearing your regalia, there is not a place to leave valuables. Only bring items that will fit in your pockets. Diplomas will be available for pickup at the graduation reception following the ceremony. For hooding, all grads (MS and PhD) will be hooded. Please make sure you have communicated to faculty that will hood you, so they know to order regalia.

Graduation Awards

Each year, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) recognizes outstanding student achievements through prestigious awards, announced at the May commencement ceremony. These awards honor exceptional academic excellence, research contributions, leadership, and service within our community.

K. Wyatt McMahon Outstanding Graduate Student Award

This award honors a doctoral student who demonstrates exceptional academic achievement, groundbreaking research contributions, and leadership in their field. The recipient also serves as the commencement speaker.

Dean’s Recognition Award

This award celebrates a master’s student for their academic excellence, leadership, and community impact. The recipient reads the GSBS seal description during the ceremony.

Harry M. Weitlauf Memorial Distinguished Service Award

This award is presented to a GMES student whose outstanding service exemplifies the values of collaboration, dedication, and community engagement.


Award Selection Process

Nominations: Faculty nominate eligible students based on academic excellence, presentations, publications, awards, and leadership.


Department Review: Nominations are reviewed by Department Chairs or Program Directors, who submit top candidates to GSBS.


Final Selection: A committee of faculty, students, and GSBS leaders evaluates nominees based on the following criteria:

  • Academic Achievement: GPA and faculty interactions during coursework.
  • Presentations: Research presentations at local, national, and international levels.
  • Scholarship: Peer-reviewed publications and their impact.
  • Awards: Prestigious fellowships and other recognitions.
  • Leadership: Contributions to the Graduate Student Association, Student Research Week, and community outreach.

Award Requirements

Recipients must attend the GSBS commencement ceremony. Scripts for commencement roles are approved by the GSBS office beforehand.
