Fourth-Year Electives

Course Number: MOBG-8408

This elective will provide the student the opportunity to manage patients that present to clinic and the EC with gynecologic complaints and participate in and care for patients that undergo gynecologic surgery. Students will have the opportunity to:

• Prepare for and perform as a surgical assistant for assigned gynecological cases in the OR
• Become proficient in preoperative “time out”
• Illustrate proper aseptic technique and patient positioning
• Gain experience in eye-hand coordinated movements relevant to basic laparoscopy and knot tying.
• Demonstrate effective communication skills regarding patient sign out and hand off
• Participate in systems improvements to promote teamwork and patient care.

Course Number: MOBG-8303

This Sub Internship will provide the student the opportunity to function as a first year resident on the Gynecologic Service. Students will have the opportunity to:

• Evaluate, present, and manage patients that present to clinic and the EC with gynecologic complaints
• Participate in and care for patients that undergo gynecologic surgery
• Prepare for and perform as a surgical assistant on assigned gynecological cases in the OR
• Become proficient in preoperative “time out”
• Illustrate proper aseptic technique and patient positioning
• Gain experience in eye-hand coordinated movements relevant to basic laparoscopy and knot tying.
• Demonstrate effective communication skills regarding patient sign out and hand off
• Participate in systems improvements to promote teamwork and patient care.

Course Number: MOBG-8401

This elective will introduce students to high-risk obstetrics with specific exposure to the clinical and laboratory diagnosis of medical, surgical, and obstetric complications of the high-risk pregnancy.  Students will have the opportunity to:

• Describe the potential fetal/neonatal complications of post term pregnancy
• Recognize the indications for induction of labor
• Review evaluation and management of conditions which complicate pregnancy
• Discuss the essential components of a genetic counseling session
• Interpret fetal heart rate tracings in laboring and non-laboring patients
• Perform and assist in vaginal and abdominal deliveries
• Participate in laceration recognition and repair and forceps assisted vaginal delivery
• Demonstrate effective communication skills regarding patient sign out and hand off

Course Number: MOBG-8302

This Sub Internship will provide students the opportunity to function as a first year resident on the Maternal Fetal Medicine Service. Students will have the opportunity to:

• Develop the skills to recognize the clinical and laboratory diagnosis of medical, surgical, and obstetric complications of the high-risk pregnancy
• Develop the skills to manage the fetal/neonatal complications of post term pregnancy
• Recognize the indications for induction of labor
• Review evaluation and management of conditions which complicate pregnancy
• Interpret fetal heart rate tracings in laboring and non-laboring patients
• Perform and assist in vaginal and abdominal deliveries
• Demonstrate effective communication skills regarding patient sign out and hand off

Course Number: MOBG-8101

This elective is a compilation of the spectrum of patients seen in gynecology, antenatal care, high risk obstetrics, urogynecologic, and infertility. Students will have the opportunity to:

• Prepare for and perform a wide range of office gynecologic procedures
• Present ob/gyn patients to supervising physicians
• Recognize the indications for induction of labor
• Counsel patients concerning contraceptive options, complications, and contraindications
• Review evaluation and management of the abnormal cervical cytology screen
• Formulate and communicate treatment plans with interprofessional teams to efficiently and effectively coordinate ambulatory patient care

Course Number: MOBG-8404

This elective is a compilation of hospital obstetrics and gynecology, family planning, gynecological surgery, and formal and informal conferences.  Students will have the opportunity to:

• Act as primary health care provider for prenatal care, delivery, and gynecologic care with resident/attending supervision
