The Garrison Institute on Aging, Dementia Friendly Lubbock

As part of its commitment to community engagement, GIA joined Dementia Friendly America to help establish Dementia Friendly Lubbock, an initiative focused on creating a more supportive and inclusive community for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. Dementia affects millions of Americans including more than 400,000 Texans and impacts families, businesses, and healthcare systems alike. Through education, advocacy, and collaboration with local partners such as the City of Lubbock, Brookdale Senior Living, South Plains Association of Governments, West Texas Alzheimer's Association, Texas Tech Physicians, Texas Tech University Health Science Center and Texas Tech University, the initiative works to change how the community understands and responds to dementia.

A key component of this effort is Dementia Live, an immersive, hands-on simulation program developed by AGE-u-cate Training Institute. Offered free by GIA’s certified facilitators, Dementia Live allows families, caregivers, students, healthcare professionals, businesses, and community members to experience the sensory and cognitive challenges associated with dementia. In addition to individual sessions, GIA hosts extended Dementia Live Workshops that provide deeper discussion, empowerment training, and connections to local resources helping make Lubbock a safer, more understanding community for all.

Register for a FREE Dementia Live session below to get started.
