Log into the Careers in Medicine (CiM) portal, then click the “Explore Options” tab at the top of the page. Select “Specialty Profiles”. Here you will find descriptors of more than 200 specialties and subspecialties. Discover which specialties align with your interests by taking the Medical Specialty Preference Inventory (MSPI) assessment.
We encourage all students to schedule a meeting with a Career Development Specialist to build, review, or polish their CV. It’s never too early to start a CV! Remember to update it as you gather new experiences during medical school. Click here to get started on developing your CV.
Once you have decided on a specialty, you can begin to draft your personal statement. To start, ask yourself: “Why did I choose this specialty?”, “Which experiences have led me to select this specialty?”, and “What are my future plans as a physician?” Be sure to meet with a Career Development Specialist for assistance. You can schedule a mock interview with a Career Development Specialist during Phase 3. We aim to emulate your real interview as much as possible to enhance your preparation for success. Therefore, professionalism is paramount. You can also practice interviewing online, at any time, on the Big Interview platform.
Preparing for residency can be a daunting task for some students. Fortunately, we have complied a team of advisors to assist you. In addition to having longitudinal career advising support from your Career Development Specialist, all MS 3 students will be paired with a Senior Career Advisor of their home campus to create an individualized residency application strategy. MS 3 students will also be instructed to meet with their assigned Clinical Faculty Advisor for additional guidance and support. Here’s a brief residency overview.
