Training Program
INPATIENT PSYCHIATRIC UNIT:
This rotation lasts for five months, interspersed throughout the academic year. The
workday lasts from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
CONSULT-LIAISON PSYCHIATRY SERVICE:
This one-month rotation occurs during the second half of the academic year. The PGY1
residents see patients on the hospital medical floor, where the various hospital services
have psychiatric questions. In addition, the PGY-1 resident will be working hand-in-hand
with a PGY-2 resident.
INTERNAL MEDICINE ROTATION:
This two-month rotation is interspersed throughout the academic year. Patients are
part of the internal medicine medical team seeing various patients for various medical
conditions throughout the hospital. Call days occur every fourth day, with said call
days typically lasting between approximately 6:30 AM until 7:00 PM.
FAMILY MEDICINE ROTATION:
This one-month rotation occurs during the first half of the academic year, where residents
see patients on the hospital floor covered by the family medical service. Residents
will also assist with admission for patients from the emergency room to the hospital
medical floor. Days typically last from 6:45 AM until 6:00 PM.
NEUROLOGY ROTATION:
This two-month rotation occurs interspersed throughout the academic year, where psychiatry
residents evaluate patients with various neurological disorders on the neurology consult
hospital floor team. Days typically last from 7:30 AM until 5:00 PM. The neurology
consult service does not usually require residents from the psychiatry service to
see or evaluate patients on the weekends.
PEDIATRICS ROTATION:
This one-month rotation occurs during the second half of the academic year, where
psychiatry residents see patients on the pediatric hospital floor. Days typically
last from 6:30 AM until 6:30 PM.
CALL SCHEDULE:
PGY-1 residents, when they are on the Consult-Liaison Service or Inpatient Psychiatric
Unit, will have "weekend rounds," days where they see inpatient psychiatric unit patients.
These days occur throughout the academic year.
First-Year residents will also participate in two to three 24-hour shift Saturday calls and two to three Sunday calls. In addition, they will see inpatient psychiatric patients and participate in psychiatric emergency room consultations and medical floor psychiatric consultations.
EMERGENCY PSYCHIATRY:
This two-month rotation is interspersed throughout the academic year, with residents
being on home call from approximately 4:30 PM until 7:00 AM, daily from Sunday until
Thursday night. In addition, the PGY-2 resident participates in Emergency Room consultations
for psychiatric emergencies and providing treatment recommendations and disposition
recommendations to either the medical floor, the psychiatric inpatient unit, or if
necessary, discharge with close follow-up.
INPATIENT PSYCHIATRY UNIT:
This one-month rotation occurs during the first six months of the academic year. The
PGY-2 resident assists the PGY-1 residents in seeing and evaluating patients in the
emergency room and helping orient the PGY-1 residents to policies and patient procedures
on the psychiatric inpatient unit.
CONSULT-LIAISON PSYCHIATRY SERVICE:
This three-month rotation is interspersed throughout the academic year. The PGY-2
residents see and evaluate patients on the medical hospital's floor for various psychiatric
disorders. The PGY-2 resident also assists the PGY-1 resident during their consult-liaison
service.
TELEMEDICINE SERVICE:
This two-month rotation occurs interspersed throughout the academic year where PGY-2
residents see and evaluate child, adolescent, and adult patients, on an outpatient
basis.
CHILD-ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRY SERVICE:
This is a three-month rotation that occurs interspersed throughout the academic year,
where second your residency and evaluate child and adolescent patients either via
telemedicine or in clinic on an outpatient basis.
ADDICTION ROTATION:
This one-month rotation occurs during the second half of the academic year. Resident
with go to inpatient detoxification and rehabilitation facility where they will observe
and assist in patient care. The resident will typically not be expected to work on
weekends.
THERAPY:
This is a longitudinal rotation where PGY-2 residents will see a therapy patient weekly
for approximately one hour except during the night service months. The PGY-2 residents
will also attend a group supervision session with the supervising psychologist, who
will help facilitate the training in psychotherapy.
CALL SCHEDULE:
PGY-2 residents will have approximately seven to eight, 24-hour shift Saturday calls
where they assist the PGY-1 resident in the inpatient psychiatric unit. In addition,
they provide emergency room and medical floor consultations.
PGY-2 residents will also have approximately four to five Sunday shifts from approximately 7:00 AM until 4:30 PM.
Third-year psychiatry residents will provide longitudinal psychiatry care on an outpatient
basis. This rotation generally occurs at the TTUHSC psychiatry clinic campus.
Third-year psychiatry residents will also see 1-3 therapy patients on various days
throughout the year.
For one-half day per week, third-year residents will see geriatric patients longitudinally during the year. This longitudinal geriatric experience will soon be switched to a one-month rotation in the second year of the residency.
Third-year psychiatry residents will also have approximately four months of perinatal
psychiatry and forensic psychiatry during the year. They will see perinatal patients
and engage in the justice system for education and evaluation of patients.
CALL SCHEDULE:
PGY-3 psychiatry residents will have approximately eight or nine 24-hours Friday call
shifts that start at 4:30 PM. The PGY-3 residents will see and evaluate emergency
psychiatry consults as well as aid in disposition of any medical psychiatry consults
that occur overnight.
PGY-4 psychiatry residents will spend a minimum of two months to a maximum of three months in the inpatient psychiatry unit acting as a junior attending.
PGY-4 psychiatry residents will spend the remainder of their year in rotation electives
and continue to see patients at the outpatient clinic throughout the week.
CALL SCHEDULE:
Fourth-year psychiatry residents do not participate in calls.
