Rotations:

The PGY-I year consists of rotations in the following areas:

  • 4 months of Primary Care Medicine -this includes Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Family Medicine
  • 2 months of Neurology
  • 6 months of Inpatient Psychiatry

ROTATION OBJECTIVES IN RELATION TO ACGME COMPETENCIES:

The PGY-I year at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Psychiatry Residency Program, is designed to consolidate resident's knowledge base and clinical skills in General Medicine, Neurology as well as inpatient Psychiatry and Emergency Psychiatry. The clinical assignment in the PGY-I year consists of 4 months of Primary Care Medicine (including Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Family Medicine), 2 months of Neurology, and 6 months of in Inpatient Psychiatry.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF PGY-1 RESIDENT INCLUDE:

  • Perform initial assessment of the patients on each service, actively participate in all aspects of diagnosis and care, including: history and physical, diagnostic and therapeutic planning, procedures, writing orders, interactions with families, daily visits, regular progress notes and admission and discharge summaries.
  • In-depth discussion with the attending and/or senior resident prior to initiation of all but the most basic diagnostic studies or therapeutic interventions.
  • Ensure active medical student involvement in the care of patients the resident is following.
  • Obtain appropriate knowledge to enable selection under supervision of patients for supportive psychotherapy in inpatient settings and to provide this modality of treatment, including documentation of the indications, benefits/risks, prescriptions, and results of supportive psychotherapy with inpatients (always under supervision of the inpatient attending).
  • Participate in Case Conferences, Journal Clubs, and Ground Rounds.
  • Participate in clinical skills verification.

Each Tuesday all Residents will have Didactic training from 1:00 pm till 5:00 pm.
