What is a Community Health Worker or Promotor(a)?
- A Community Health Worker (CHW) is a trusted member of the community, and has a close understanding of the ethnicity, language, socio-economic status, and life experiences of the community served
- Acts as a liaison and provides cultural mediation between healthcare, social services, and the community
- Helps people increase access to needed services and resources
- Builds individual, community, and system capacity through health knowledge and self-sufficiency
- Provides social support, advocacy and clinical research
- Provides services through outreach, patient navigation, community health education and information
Who can become a Community Health Worker?
- Anyone who wants to make an impact in their community
- Anyone who is interested in receiving a certification from the State of Texas
- Anyone who has a;
- Texas Residence
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must pass a criminal background check

What is involved?
Core CHW Training
- Interactive course that meets the TX DSHS required eight core competencies for CHWs
- Sixteen-week commitment
- 40 hrs. per week includes:
- One Zoom class
- Online learning via LMS
- 30 hrs. Service Learning
- Must have access to technology (ex: laptop, iPad, etc. & reliable internet)
- 40 hrs. per week includes:
- Apply for CHW Training
CHW Apprenticeship Program
- Includes core CHW training
- One-year commitment
- Paid on the job learning
- 40 hrs. per week (includes required coursework; 2000 hrs. total)
- Registered through the Department of Labor
