Division of Nephrology

The TTU-HSC Lubbock Division of Nephrology has been recognized for excellence in clinical care, research and education programs throughout the west Texas region and Nationally for over 25 years.

We are committed to providing comprehensive care of all kidney diseases. 

Patient Care

• Expertise and specialized clinics to treat patients through our chronic kidney disease clinic, glomerular diseases, cancer survivor nephrology, difficult to manage hypertension, Polycystic or other cystic disorders of the kidney, interstitial and autoimmune disorders affecting the kidney, stone prevention clinics.
• Patient care through several established outpatient in center dialysis programs and we are currently dedicated to growing our home hemo and peritoneal dialysis programs for patients who live in areas with limited access to in center dialysis. We have a dedicated vascular surgery team with whom we work hand in hand to establish timely and ongoing dialysis access management.
• Transplant expertise though University Medical Center (UMC) Lubbock’s transplant clinic, for longitudinal care of all kidney and pancreas transplant recipients. 

Research and Innovation

The Division of Nephrology is actively involved (and known nationally for a few decades) in a wide range of clinical and NIH funded basic science research studies. Besides clinical and industry sponsored research, there is basic research being performed in nephrology research laboratories. Currently the Prabhakar lab is pursuing molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis of diabetic renal disease using animal models and in vitro cell culture studies. Funding for this research was provided by several agencies including American Heart Association, South Plains Foundation and more consistently by the Woirhaye Research Endowment. Opportunities are offered to medical students, renal fellows, and post-doctoral fellows to participate in the lab research. 

Education & Training

The diverse interests of our talented faculty combined with the outstanding strengths of Texas Teach Health Sciences Center as a leading Institute in health care and medical education, allows us to have a strong Renal Fellowship Program. We offer competitive Nephrology Fellowship Training Program and a combined Nephrology  and Critical Care Fellowship Training Program.
