Obstetrics & Gynecology
Chairman's Welcome
Dr. Teresa E. Baker, Professor and Regional Chair
Welcome to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Amarillo, a comprehensive component of TTUHSC and Texas Tech Physicians.
TTUHSC-Amarillo is located within the campus of Harrington Regional Medical Center which includes our outpatient facilities and our teaching hospitals – Northwest Texas Healthcare System and Baptist St. Anthony’s Healthcare System. The medical center serves as the regional referral center for areas of West Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, and Kansas.
Our comprehensive outpatient facility provides a superb site for education and clinical care with services including obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound, bone densitometry, urodynamic testing, comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic care including subspecialty care, and a unique women’s health center combining the services of internal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology.
The mission of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is to improve the health of women through all our activities:
- Providing the highest quality of education to our residents, medical students, faculty, private physicians, other healthcare providers, and the community.
- Delivering the highest quality care and services for women throughout their life cycle.
- Health maintenance for women of all ages.
- Consultative care to women with infertility and endocrinologic disorders, complications of pregnancy, gynecologic problems, urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse, genetic questions and disorders; and providing diagnostic ultrasound services as well as comprehensive care for women with gynecologic cancers.
- Conducting research regarding the health of women to advance knowledge and translate our findings into new programs for women.
Our physicians and staff pay careful attention to our roles in the education of medical students and residents, research in women’s health and reproduction, and the delivery of patient care to women. Our efforts contribute to TTUHSC’s initiatives in academics, total health, and the delivery of health care through regionalization. Women are the center of all our activities.
Research and publication are key components of our department. Our faculty members serve as investigators on research protocols at local, regional, and national levels. Residents conduct research with direct mentoring by the faculty with their results being presented at regional and national meetings.
Teaching is a vital component of all that we do; it is part of the fabric of our department. The faculty is dedicated to advancing and teaching the knowledge and skills of obstetrics and gynecology, including minimally invasive procedures such as robotic surgery and other complex laparoscopic procedures.
Our residency program has an excellent reputation for providing a broad spectrum of scholarly and clinical experiences enabling graduates to excel as independently practicing obstetrician/gynecologists or continue into a fellowship program. The systems-based curriculum encompasses all competencies as well as hands-on skills training in both real-time and simulation settings. We teach medical students of our school as well as fourth-year students visiting from medical schools across the country. While providing for the education of the next generation of physicians, we also provide community education and outreach to expand women’s knowledge about their health and the health of their partner. Innovative education programs and the commitment of our faculty to excellence in education and research contribute to our ability to excel in the delivery of health care for women.
