Increase Access, Conquering Challenges
Through imaginative scholarly research, innovative technology and comprehensive education and outreach, TTUHSC serves as an invaluable resource to the people of West Texas rural communities. TTUHSC rural health initiatives are built upon the foundation established in three areas: rural health care, the West Texas Area Health Education Center (WTAHEC) and the school district based Campus Alliance for Telehealth Resources (CATR). Our constant drive to discover and apply knowledge to improve rural health is critical to the lives of those who live where accessibility is inadequate—especially in today’s rapidly advancing health climate.
What it means to invest in Rural Health at TTUHSC:

Supporting the F. Marie Hall Institute of Rural Health, which supplies resources to address the unique health needs of the state’s 108 westernmost counties

Supporting the TexLa Telehealth Resource Center, which provides technical assistance to rural hospitals and providers on telehealth issues
- Supporting the West Texas Area Health Education Center (WTAHEC), which provides for 116 counties through 400 training sites in the region

$1.4 MILLION biennial investment provides vital resources to identify, analyze, and address the
unique health needs
of the 108 westernmost counties
- Telemedicine has provided health care access to over 100,000 people in the rural areas of West Texas
- TexLa Telehealth Resource Center provides technical assistance to rural hospitals and providers on telehealth issues
$3.6 MILLION biennial appropriation serves as the state match for the West Texas Area Health Education Center (WTAHEC) Federal grant, serving 116 counties through 400 training sites in the region.
- Placed primary care health professions students in 8,319 rotations in rural areas
- Provided health literacy education to 68,704 residents in the region
- Educated more than 553,054 students about health care career opportunities
