More About The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is the founding sciences department of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Pharmacy (SOP) and continues to support innovative research and education for the SOP. In 1998, the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences formed the Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences which currently enrolls ~44Ph.D. graduate students and is part of the TTUHSC Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty members are responsible for teaching pharmacy and graduate students in pharmacology, physiology, pharmaceutics, drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, drug design, regulatory affairs and biostatistics.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is currently comprised of 53 faculty/staff; including 12 faculty, 2 staff, 4 post-doc/research associates and 29 GPPS graduate students whose research interests include targeted drug delivery, pharmacokinetics and the role of the blood-brain barrier in smoking, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. Faculty research programs have been supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DOD), American Heart Association (AHA), Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences also supports the Amarillo Biomedical Research Internship Program each summer to provide research opportunities to undergraduate science students
