Welcome to Dallas-Fort Worth
From a handful of third- and fourth-year doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) students in 1999 to approximately 150 future pharmacy practitioners in 2014, the clinical practice and research programs for the TTUHSC School of Pharmacy have flourished in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) Metroplex.
When the SOP initiated its Dallas-based clinical training programs, our facilities were based at the Baylor University Medical Center. Motivated by program expansion and a unique partnership forged with the local Veterans Affairs Hospital, we relocated our teaching and training facilities to the VA North Texas Medical Center campus in 2002. Spurred by a subsequent collaboration with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, we expanded to a second DFW location in 2008.
This move into the Southwest Professional Building gave our students and faculty immediate access to the heart of the Dallas Medical District and several of our important DFW partners like UTSW, Children’s Medical Center and Parkland Health and Hospital System.
The pharmacology laboratory was moved to our SW Campus facilities in 2011 to enhance our research and training programs. These new and expanded laboratory facilities allowed us to form alliances with Baylor’s Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center, UTSW’s Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center and other leading cancer researchers in the region.
Making an Impact
Historically, about half of our PharmD students have come from the DFW area, and because many have returned to their hometown roots upon graduation, the number of TTUHSC-trained registered pharmacists in the Metroplex continues to blossom.
In addition, our students and faculty have become active members of the community by participating in local charitable events and projects, organizing regional health fairs and delivering pharmaceutical care that benefits the citizens of North Texas.
Today, the SOP continues to partner with the major healthcare institutions and pharmacies in the Metroplex. Our students fulfill their experiential requirements in local retail pharmacy settings, through the school’s time-tested partnerships and through our more recent affiliations with some of DFW’s largest healthcare providers, including Cook Children’s Medical Center, Harris-Methodist Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital.
Meet Our Regional Dean
Steven Pass, PharmD, FCCM, FCCP, FASHP, BCPS
Dr. Pass supports the Academic Dean of the School in all matters that affect the Dallas regional campuses, including but not limited to physical facilities; student learning; fiscal matters impacting the operation of the campuses; academic program management at the campus level; marketing and stakeholder outreach; and functional management of faculty contracts.
