Prepare
- Sign up for active shooter training.
- If you see something suspicious, say something.
- Know community response plans.
- Identify the exits and good places to hide.
During
Survive
- Avoid

- Defend
After
Be Safe
- Help law enforcement.
- Seek out medical help.
- Help others survive.
- Seek help to cope with psychological trauma.
AVOID. DENY. DEFEND
Avoid
- Attempt to evacuate.
- Know secondary exits (doors, windows, stairs).
- Leave your belongings behind.
- Help others escape, if possible.
- Alert others when avoiding/exiting.
- Call 911 when you are safe.
Deny
- Lock and/or barricade the door.
- No lights / No noise (silence cell phone).
- Hide behind large objects.
- Remain very quiet.
- Prevent others from entering the area.
- Call 911 when you are safe.
- Be out of the shooter's view.
- Be out of the line of fire.
- Not trap or restrict your movement.
Defend
- Set up for counter attack.
- Attempt to incapacitate the shooter.
- Use improvised weapons.
- Commit to your actions.
Call 911 when it is safe to do so
Lockdown
- Find a safe place to hide or shelter-in-place.
- Lock and/or barricade doors, turn off lights and computers, silence mobile devices, and remain quiet.
- Take cover and get out of the line-of-sight.
- Do not attempt to enter the building.
- Get as far away from the area as possible and seek shelter.
- Do not call individuals who may be inside the building as this may put them at risk of being found by the active shooter.
special needs considerations
- Be aware of special needs individuals and assist them if possible.
- Make them aware of the situation, and assist them in evacuation or moving to an area of refuge.
- Evacuation Chairs can be used to assist individuals with limited mobility.
- Contact TTUHSC Safety services for assistance with training in using evacuation chairs.
- Help them defend themselves if there are no other options.
